Its construction started in 1904 and was a considerable accomplishment in the first years of the 20th century.

The Peterborough Lift Lock was designated a National Historic Site in 1979 and was named an Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1987.

Peterborough Lift Lock Experience

The Trent-Severn Waterway is known to many as a recreation paradise. And its on this waterway that the Lift-Lock experience is built. This mode of transportation had shaped the history of the Kawartha area. Over time, the commercial value of the bridge declined. However its recreational value increased.

Visitors go to Peterborough and Trent area mostly to experience the Lift-lock cruise. This site is managed by the Kent Family who has been taking care of the site for the last 21 years.

There are many cruise options to choose from including luncheon and dinner cruises and private parties. I chose “sight-seeing cruise”. Its a 2 hour cruise ride that cost me $26 CAD (2016). And I was able to experience the lift-lock process in action, with live and entertaining commentary by the Cruise Captain.

Our tour started at the Peterborough Marina, next to the Holiday Inn. The tour covered the Little Lake, past the Peterborough Centennial Fountain and into the City of Peterborough portion of the 112-year-old lock system.

Nearing the hydraulic lift

The final lift was 65 feet or 19.8m above the city!

View from the top. It was quite an amazing experience, something very unique.

You can only marvel at mankind’s inventions 🙂

Other then the cruise, the Peterborough marina has gardens and restaurants around. Nice place to spend Ontario summers and learn about its history

I made a promise to myself to travel to 2 new places every year, doesn’t have to be far or fancy – any new exploration- any new destination. This space highlights my travel experiences, with insights on the places visited. So lets go “to some place new” Cheers!!! xoxo Ibn Battuta :“Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
